Details

In all, they ask you for 7 pieces of data.

  • Pet’s Name. Obviously not required but fun to share.
  • Is Your Pet a Dog or a Cat? You select one or the other.
  • What Breed Is Your Pet? They have a complete list on a dropdown menu you can scroll through and then just select what matches. They also have entries for mixed dogs and cross-mixes like the Puggle, or the Golden Doodle, etc.
  • Pet’s Date of Birth. It’s okay to guess, and you select from the dropdown menus for month and then year.
  • What is your home zip code?
  • What is your email? It’s okay to enter a real address you monitor. They only send a few follow-up emails and are not aggressive or spammy. Plus they have some really good content about dogs and dog health they share on their site.

That’s it. You choose ‘Get My Quote’ and you’re taken to the next page where your quote is displaying. It defaults to showing you a quote with 80% coverage and a $250 deductible. Specifications

We have two dogs and Healthy Paws does also offer a one-click ‘add a pet’ option which only needs to know if they’re a dog or cat, the breed, and their age to add to your current quote. For this review, we stuck with just one of our dogs. Maya is a 65-lb mutt. When we rescued her they thought she was a cattle dog. As she grew up she looks like a Belgian Malinois. So we call her a Malinois/mix. Or sometimes just Shepherd/mix. The Healthy Paws Pet Insurance quote tool made it real easy by simply offering the choice of ‘Large Mixed Breed (60+ lbs)’. She is four years old, current on all her vet visits and shots, and healthy. When I punched in her answers and selected ‘Get a Quote’, I was immediately taken to the 2nd page where the monthly premium was displayed for 80% coverage and a $250 deductible. You can then click around the other options for coverage amount (70%, 80% or 90%) and deductible ($100, $250, or $500) for immediate changes to the monthly quote. Here is what we got with our information for Maya. You can mix and match 12 variations of coverages

    Summary

    Healthy Paws Pet Insurance

    Pros:
All the plans compared to our fictitious scenario ended with the consumer basically breaking even. This is a good thing. Insurance is intended to make sure you can afford the treatment necessary when needed, and that is exactly what this does.

    Cons:
This is no fault of the plan, but the lowest coverage (70%) and highest deductible ($500) not surprisingly leaves the consumer with the highest per-incident remaining cost. It’s the 4th least expensive overall, but does require you have adequate emergency cash available.

    Final Thoughts:
High coverage with a high deductible ended up costing the least overall. What’s best for you depends on how much emergency cash you always have available. If an unexpected $1,000 charge would cause significant financial stress, then paying a few more dollars each month is a better plan for you.
