Dog Bed with Cover
Some may think beds for a dog are too much of a luxury, but for the rest of us, let me share a story of why dog beds are so great.
For Christmas this past year I could think of no decent gift to send my grandmother. Well, this has been true for the past ten years or so. Let’s face it, she already owns what she wants and simply doesn’t care for token gifts and random trinkets to clutter her home. So I did the next best thing.
I found gifts for her rat-terrier mix named Heidi. Heidi was adopted by my grandmother about five years ago. She’s a nippy little thing and seems to really only like my grandmother. Both my father and I have had our pants-cuffs snatched more than once, and I almost lost a finger wagging it at her one time when she went for some cheese and crackers on the table.
Anyway, she provides companionship for my grandmother – whether on her daily walk or simply around the house – and barks when someone is at the door. The last time I saw her I witnessed how she likes to burrow under her blankets when she sleeps. She has her own blankets upon which to sit on the couch and manages to flip a fold over herself as she burrows in for a nap. Thinking of this, I searched online to find a small bed or cushion my grandmother could offer her. At first I thought I’d find the same-old, same-old, but was pleasantly surprised to come across the Petmate Burrow Bed at Petco.com.
The product description describes how it is engineered for small dogs which like to burrow. It has the classic pillow like most dog beds, but also has an additional flap which comes up from one side and provides a cover for dogs to nestle under. I read the review and many owners of dachshunds simply raved about how their little guys just loved the bed. Even a couple of cat-owners chimed in. It has a zip-off cover for easy cleaning, and came in a variety of colors and a couple of sizes.
I chose the 25-inch diameter model in navy/oat colors and shipped it off to Grandma’s house in time for Christmas. It only took a couple of days to get their without paying for any expedited shipping and arrived as ordered.
My grandmother called me immediately to tell me how pleased she and Heidi were with the new bed. Admittedly, Heidi at first attempted to burrow underneath the entire bed as it was placed upon one end of the couch. But after showing her she was supposed to sleep on top of it, Heidi quickly and naturally figured out the burrowing feature and immediately fell asleep in it. Now it’s her favorite nesting spot. She jumps in and covers everything but the tip of her nose. She falls asleep and rests comfortably – barely moving a muscle; unless, of course, the doorbell rings. J
By providing this soft and comfortable spot, Heidi stays off the remainder of the furniture, feels secure in her “hiding-spot”, and is a happy dog.
